Anime as Spiritual Experience: A Sacred Exploration of Neurodivergent Faith through Secular Fandoms
Publication information:
Abstract
Spirituality encompasses a range of beliefs and practices beyond traditional religion. For neurodivergent adults, special interests can help heal religious and social traumas by fostering self-acceptance and social bonds. Many find personal growth and reconnect with their inner child through their special interests, healing childhood traumas, negative self-concepts, and social wounds. Anime explores spiritual, developmental, and relational themes, creating diverse and inclusive global fandoms that can support trauma recovery, foster deep relationships, and cultivate hope and optimism, while showing that spiritual belonging can exist without religion. For many religiously disillusioned neurodivergent individuals, anime fandoms provide sacred spaces for self-actualization and belonging within welcoming communities.
