Austin Osman Spare: On the Excavation of the Stratified Psyche
Atavism, Occultism, and Indigeneity. This paper considers the work of the Edwardian Artist and Occultist (1886-1956). It considers his artistic endeavours and magico-religious philosophy as coterminous, and intertwined with his magical praxis. It considers the relationship of his thought to the emergent psychodynamic psychology, more especially in what might be termed the palaeontology of the stratified psyche. In this regard, it explores the notion of Atavistic Resurgence, and considers how Spare’s praxis may relate to the shamanistic evocation of tutelary spirits, along with other elements of indigeneity.
