To Be-Longing: The Drum as Technology of Sacred Homesickness

Abstract
The West’s crisis of belonging does not arise from a lack of inclusion, diversity, or representation, but from our estrangement from the Mystery at the root of human experience. We are homesick for our origin; we long toward it. But what if to be longing is be-longing? Not a problem to be solved or a void to be filled, but our portal to what resists language, both our most luminous gift and our deepest sorrow. The drum is a hermetic bridge between the rational world and the realm beyond reason. This workshop invites us to let the drum be our guide into the intelligence of our own longing.
Presenter Biography
Sofya Yampolsky is an artist and writer exploring Mediterranean mystery traditions and the mystical/shamanic practices of Western Civilization. She holds master’s degrees from The New School for Social Research and St. John's College. She studies traditional New Mexican weaving, Flamenco, and the southern Italian frame drum.
