Abstract

In interviews with Black Catholics around the U.S., I heard a common sentiment: "When
people think of the Catholic Church, they do not think of us." This paper aims to uplift the story of marginalized Black Americans in the Catholic Church, beginning with the story of Black Catholics in the Diocese of St. Augustine, home of the first baptized Black Catholic. Connecting past stories, featuring the evangelization of freed slaves by nuns, and present ones, showcasing the diverse Black communities there today, this paper strives to reveal the themes, challenges, and triumphs that connect them all.

Presenter Biography

Sheila Hodges is a 2026 Master of Theological Studies graduate of Harvard Divinity School. Her work explores the intersections of religion, human rights, and criminal justice reform. Alongside her scholarship, she is launching a Catholic media company dedicated to uplifting minority voices.
