Abstract

Artist Talk: Artist Asana Hughes will discuss “Chakra Studies,” a series of artworks rooted in the traditional practice of chakra meditation and study. This project aims to bring tradition into a contemporary context to investigate the intersection of artistic and spiritual practices. This project consists of two images for each of the seven chakras according to the Yoga/Sanatan Dharma system. The first is a traditional image. The second expresses a unique interpretation of traditional symbolism through colour theory, semiotics, and contemporary methods. Asana will be explaining his process and a walkthrough of each painting. The virtual gallery features both “Chakra Studies” and “Facets of Light #1 & #2,” which are two vibrant, geometric depictions of visions first encountered during deep-state meditations.  The visions came with an intuitive understanding that we are each a radiating beam or facet of a single source of light, and each perspective is equally important to the function of the whole. So thank you for being you. These artworks bridge the worlds of Spirituality and the Arts as they are a direct result of spiritual practice, seeking to reproduce psycho-scopic expressions of experiences encountered in meditation.
