Collective Vocal Improvisation as an Ancestral Practice of Interdependence

Combining my artistic and academic research, I propose a participatory performance which presents collective vocal improvisation through an “ecosystemic performance paradigm,” whose “understanding of balance opens up alternative conceptions of creativity and embodiment that challenge anthropocentric and gendered conceptions of agency” (Magnat, 2021).
Through a sonic exploration combined with verbal reflection and prompts for listeners, I aim to open up space around my positionality and wider concepts linking spontaneous expression with oral tradition and folklore. This will weave together elements of Slavic cultural knowledge and vocality with considerations on the relationship between Central East European Identity and decoloniality through a musical sharing of voice, landscape, looping and sound
manipulation.
