Finding the Hiphophthegmata Sacra

Abstract
At first glance Hiphophthegmata is an unwieldly word (though, not often does one find five syllable words that are not). Hiphophthegmata is a neologism, a portmanteau of my own construction. It is born from a specific context and for a specific purpose. As a lifelong lover of hip hop, it represents my attempt to create a practice and structure for reflecting on and critically evaluating the lyrics that have comprised the soundtrack to my life. Who are the lyrical luminaries we revere? What does the music we listen to tell us about our values? Who’s in your top five?
Presenter Biography
Malcolm Brown is an M.Div. degree candidate at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. A lifelong music lover, Malcolm writes, produces, and releases his own contributions to the hip hop ecosystem as Brotha Malcolm. He lives in Nashville, TN with his wonderful wife Karlynn and their son Caleb.
