Abstract

From the Acéphale emblem of Georges Bataille’s secret order, to George Balanchine’s, “Don’t think—just do!,” this paper will explore the heightened bodily state of headlessness as a nexus point between spiritual and artistic practice. Also, as a place of personal sovereignty. Highlighting a union of force and form that aims at the open fluidity of no-mind, we will consider what it means to journey into the Earth of us in both ritual and creative contexts, and how the performance of headless meditation brings the powers of receptivity and embodiment into bold realization.
