Musical Creativity as Spiritual Journey - “Through great tribulation…through the roads of creation to One Love” (Bob Marley)
Publication information:
Abstract
Musical creativity as a spiritual practice is a powerful resource that facilitates healing through the unfolding of a spiritual journey. Bob Marley’s experience of Post-Colonial racial discrimination and Simon Pipe’s struggle with addiction offer us examples of prevalent socio-cultural narratives. With the albums Exodus (Bob Marley, Jamaica) and Just for Today (Simon Pipe, Barbados) a spiritual journey unfolds, demonstrating how musical creativity as spiritual practice, enables the artist to transcend their respective circumstances and re-write their cultural narratives. In both albums, we see their spiritual journey, revealed through musical creativity, as an expression of faithful love, spiritual freedom and self-transcendence.
