The Paradox of Belonging: Balancing the Needs for Community and Independence
Publication information:
Abstract
A central paradox in the alternative spiritual space is: You’re on your own—and you can’t do it alone. Seekers want the advantages of spiritual community (camaraderie, support, guidance, etc). and they also long to be free of the constraints inherent in membership (pressure to conform, fear of ostracism, restricted information, etc.). Navigating the ambivalence of competing desires—for both companionship and autonomy—is a challenge that requires self-awareness, discernment, vigilance, and, ironically, good company. This presentation, based on hundreds of interviews, will describe the core elements of this paradox and delineate the many ways seekers have attempted to deal with it. It will offer guidelines for finding the blend of belonging and independence that best suits one’s individual needs and spiritual orientation, along with red flags for assessing the risks of belonging to a specific community and determining a suitable level of involvement within it.
