Phenomenological Ecology: Practices for Belonging on Earth

Abstract
Ecology is the science of relations and relationship. To assert that everything is connected is one thing, but to directly experience it for ourselves is quite another. In this workshop, we attend carefully to our most abundant, but neglected or even reviled, living natural neighbors – plants and insects. How might we learn to truly see and belong-with a white oak tree? A dandelion? A monarch butterfly? A honeybee? Poison ivy? Mosquitoes?
Presenter Biography
Ryan Shea is a researcher and educator at The Nature Institute in New York and a doctoral researcher at MESH (Multidisciplinary Environmental Studies in the Humanities) at University of Cologne. His research seeks to develop the practice of contemplative ecology, focusing on plants and insects, and informed by the tradition of Goethean transformative phenomenology.
