Abstract

Sitar master Ravi Shankar was one of India’s premier cultural emissaries. He not only introduced the West to the sublime beauty of the nation’s classical music, he also helped legitimize the spiritual heritage at the root of the traditional art form. With the help of videos of Shankar speaking and performing, this presentation will chronicle and elucidate how the maestro’s remarkable impact on five genres of Western music (classical, jazz, avant garde, rock, and world music) opened the way for millions of seekers to discover Indian spirituality and apply it in ways that shaped the domain of alternative spirituality.
