Abstract

Performance: This presentation will explore the profound spirituality in the work of a Brazilian songwriter and performer, Zeca Pagodinho, and his freedom to include his religious identity in his performances, lyrics, public appearances, and interviews.  By capturing his devotional performances, this work aims to highlight the intersection of his faith, music, and popular culture while performing for audiences that largely do not share his religious background.  His songs about Orishas, Umbanda, Candomblé, and his faith resonate widely, reflecting Brazil’s syncretic and spiritualized culture. Zeca Pagodinho is one of Brazil’s most beloved samba artists.
