Abstract

Artist Talk: This presentation will address the under-appreciated spiritual ramifications of ceramics materials and processes, particularly as they mirror the transformational physical and metaphysical aspects of Alchemy.  From the point of view of a practicing artist I will address the assimilation of spiritual components informed by study and practice into a contemporary body of work. I will discuss my studio work, social practice and scholarship related to the use of ceramic vessels in religious ritual and practice in West Africa and the Diaspora, and spiritual implications of teaching contemporary creative practice within a university.
