Abstract

Performance: ‘Spirit Sensing: Anima of the Quarry’ is a short film based on an intuitive performance by Kyle Browne and Stan Strickland while in residence at Manship Artists Residency. The performance was inspired by Browne’s explorations of the energy of the site and the belief in anima, that all things have a consciousness. The screening of ‘Spirit Sensing’ is accompanied by a live performance with Browne and Strickland, a jazz musician, and interactive discussion with the audience.


Presenter Biography

Kyle Browne is a Boston-based interdisciplinary, conceptual artist. She envisions her work through a multi-disciplinary lens, finding richness at the intersection of processes, content and in collaboration. Kyle holds a MFA from the School of Visual Arts, NYC, MEd from Lesley University, Cambridge, MA and a BFA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY.

Singer, saxophonist and flautist, Stan Strickland has performed extensively throughout the US and Europe. He has played with the Boston Pops, Aretha Franklin, Pharoah Sanders and opened for Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins. He is associate professor of voice at Berklee College of Music and co-executive director of Express Yourself, a multi-cultural arts organization serving youth at risk.

Rebecca Reynolds, executive director of the Manship Artists Residency, is a museum professional and arts administrator with 40 years experience. She served as a curator and art consultant specializing in American sculpture, as the founding director of Forest Hills Educational Trust and its community outreach and public art programs, as Boston's Museum of Fine Arts Sharf Fellow, and as a member of Gloucester’s Committee for the Arts.

Ken Kinna, editor and producer of Spirit Sensing, has an extensive background in photography, film, and media production. He founded B-Roll films to produce his video work and ran a local TV station in Lynn, MA, which received awards for its ART617 programming.
