Abstract

Workshop: “Watch Me” explores the transformative journeys of two former Jehovah’s Witnesses, Kimberly Ding and Jonathan Fleming, who use art as a means of healing from the church’s restrictive doctrines and abuses of power. This proposal outlines a zine workshop led by Kimberly, Jonathan, and guest artist Bren Bataclan, where participants will be invited to reflect on themes of love, loss, and individuality in the face of spiritual oppression. Inspired by Kimberly and Jonathan's creation of zines that deconstruct the authoritarian narratives of “The Watchtower” magazine, attendees will create their own zines as acts of self-expression, creativity, empowerment, and critical thinking.
