When the Need to Belong Becomes a Transaction, Harm Happens

Belonging is foundational to human survival, wired as deeply into our nervous system as
hunger. Yet this primal need can become a doorway to exploitation. This presentation examines how high-control groups weaponize belonging by conflating transactional needs (food, shelter, material support) with relational ones (unconditional care, community). Drawing on evolutionary psychology, survivor accounts, and frameworks from spiritual integrity work, we explore how this confusion creates conditions for harm—particularly in spiritual communities where traditional models of selfless service obscure material realities. Rather than prescriptive solutions, this talk offers an invitation to awareness: naming where transaction hides in relational clothing, and creating transparency that protects both our humanity and our spirituality.
