Abstract

How can Osho simultaneously be regarded as both an impactful spiritual teacher and the most dangerous man on Earth? This paper seeks to hold the paradox of this dynamic in tension without succumbing to the either idealization or demonization so often applied to teachers of this nature. By analyzing the degrees to which Osho’s Neo-Tantric sensibilities align with the Classical Tantric teachings of various streams like the Kula and Krama lineages, I ultimately display that Osho cannot be considered a teacher of Classical Tantra, despite his claims to defining and teaching the spirit of tantra. I also consider whether the degree to which an alternative spirituality aligns with and honors the classical traditions it draws upon has an influence on its degree of potential harmfulness.
