Abstract

Abstract: The study of Bharatanatyam’s development through artistic periodization unveils its transformative journey within cultural settings and temporal frames. Influenced by colonial forces and subsequent decolonization, this dance form, deeply rooted in spirituality, underwent profound changes. Employing a qualitative approach involving historical scrutiny and critical discourse analysis, the research delves into the intricate interplay of spirituality, the arts, and socio-political dynamics. Colonial interventions obscured Bharatanatyam’s spiritual essence, yet decolonial efforts sparked a deliberate resurgence, reclaiming its intrinsic spirituality and transcending imposed constraints. This exploration underscores spirituality’s pivotal role, illustrating Bharatanatyam’s resilience amid colonial suppression and subsequent decolonial resurgence, echoing the enduring bond between spirituality, artistic expression, and cultural identity across shifting eras.
